Project 1: Form and Function

Bridges are structures that are used to help transport people, and surplus through bodies of water. There are many unique and well known bridges. The whole concept of this project is to recreate these chosen bridge prototypes into something new. With the use of inspirational mechanisms, such as scissors, staplers, and a gym lock, the bridge can have a new function. In order for the bridge to have the function the structure must be altered as well.

This is the list of mechanical tools that inspire the preliminary designs of the bridges. I used scissors, stapler, and a gym lock as inspiration.

Preliminary Designs

Preliminary design # 1

Preliminary design # 1

This is a drawing of the design and motion of the first preliminary design. There is a gear/pulley system that is used to lift that portion of the road bed. This is the one I chose for my project.

Preliminary design # 2 motion

Preliminary design # 2 motion

This is a drawing of the motion of the second preliminary drawing. There are a set of gears and pulleys right along the horizontal member. Also, there's a moving track that helps bring out the road bed and the mechanical arms lift the road bed up with a pulley system. This motion was inspired by the motion of the scissor.
